Soft Snow Falling

We've had an amazingly warm and open winter, so this morning's soft snow was a delight. I woke to an inch of snow gently coating the trees and lawns. I enjoyed my morning coffee and then was out and about the yard trying to capture this elusive beauty. Thank heavens, that I was, as it was almost completely melted by mid-morning.

But I was able to capture some scenes in our back yard and an image that I used for my Beyond Layers Homework assignment.

My finished image was very close to the original that I shot. A little cropping, some very subtle texture (actually 4 different texture layers in overlay blend mode at very low opacity, just because I was playing and having fun), and a gradient map (part of this week's assignment) and a hue/saturation adjustment layer. After all of that you could hardly tell the original from this image except for the cropping!

And here is a melting snow dripping off a 1/2 inch long ice crystal that Clemens photographed. He was a little slower drinking his coffee but got out there in time for some beautiful snow shots and then for the melting. He was able to get a fantastic video of a super closeup of water dripping off a branch. Of course, he maintains that he was just waiting for the battery to be fully charged. And of course, the light changed to green just as he finished getting ready.

6 Words of Inspiration

I am currently taking Kim Klassen's Beyond Layers course and loving it. I was initially attracted to the opportunity to learn photography and digital scrapbooking techniques from a person whose works I've always admired. But above all, I was drawn to Kim's positive attitude and desire to help people "go beyond" both creatively and in their life endeavors.

This week's assignment was to tell about your life in six words. Based on an idea started by Smith Magazine and recently promoted by Oprah in her O Magazine, you are asked to describe your life in six words. I'm not at the point where I can or want to sum up my life to date, so I decided to describe my life in the moment, focusing on a recent photography expedition to a nearby arboretum where I spend a delightful Sunday afternoon as my husband and I both indulged in the sights and scents of the gardens and life behind the lens.

Deck The Halls

Just in time for the holidays we have Deck The Halls, a joyous holiday kit, perfect for your holiday greeting cards, layouts and special projects. For seven years, I owned and operated a Bed and Breakfast in a large old Victorian country house with 7 working fireplaces, high ceilings and beautiful woodwork and moldings. The holiday season was my favorite time and I loved making wreaths, decorating the tree and mantels and filling the house with the smells of Christmas baking and greenery. In this kit, I worked on capturing that special holiday magic.

Here is the kit I created for the October Digidesignresort Mix and Match collection. This was a special one for me as a contest was held where designers voted for their favorite palette and theme, and the winner was our own Ariadne (Janet). I love both the palette and the theme. Using the title of the kit, I searched out authentic old tapestries and wallpapers in the public domain so this kit is filled with those images and inspiration. It contains 30 elements, created at 300 dpi, and 9 papers, all 12" x 12" in jpeg format.

This kit was definitely a labor of love and a delight to do. I always enjoy doing collabs with my daughter Dawn and this kit was no exception. Fleurs d'un Jour Just Released and 50% off, Freebie

A prize winning rose bush at the local gardens inspired this colorful flower kit. I fell in love with the luscious rose/orange/gold colors and so Fleurs d'un Jour was born. The name is courtesy of CT member Chris. We had a naming contest for this kit with CT members voting for their favorite name. The translation from the French would be flowers of the day.

It contains 10 textured papers, 12" x 12" in jpeg format, and 42 elements, full size, in png format with no shadows. Not all is shown in the previews.

The August Collabs have just been released

at Heritage Scrap and what a beautiful collection it is. A striking color palette and a

great theme. Here is what Kate, owner of the Heritage Scrap store, wrote about the collection. I felt that her words were so evocative that I included them here.

August has historically been the month of family vacations here in the US. In Europe, many towns and villages close the shutters and go on holiday in August as well. The days are long and Mother Nature primes them well for grand adventures, fascinating discoveries and inescapable memories that live with us the rest of our days.

A good friend once mused, as we discussed the summers of our childhood, “Ask me what I did in any given July of my youth, and the days run together in a blur. Ask me about the August’s of my youth and I can nearly relive every single vacation trip. I am instantly a child again, in the back of that town and country, wood paneled station wagon – laden down with nearly everything we owned. I can recall the fragrant mix of Brill Gream, Aqua Net and White Shoulders perfume that would wander back to us from the front seat. I still remember the smell of our skin caked with Coppertone sunscreen, mouths painted with sticky vanilla ice cream from Tastee Freeze and the musky scent of my baseball glove that never left my side. I remember visiting a field of wild buffalo, seeing a giant ball of string, running through a park with gigantic dinosaurs on a mountain top, and driving on narrow ribbons of road that stretched for eternity in between fields of tall stalks of sweet corn and golden, wild grass, listening to the static laced music from the car radio and the entire family singing along to Purple People Eater. There were hot itchy days touring Yellowstone and somber, silent moments side by side at the edge of Gettysburg. Funny, just talking about it now brings my parents back to life. God, we had some great vacations. “

I think we all can easily conjur the memories of our childhood vacations & summer trips – whether they were spent touring the roads of your country, camped out in a forest or stretched out on the sand of gorgeous stretch of shore. It is the best of times. It is when we were able to reconnect with our loved ones and where time seemed to slow down long enough for the simple things to matter again.

To embark on a journey is to leave behind the normalcy of everyday life and run with arms wide open into the unknown. Be it a foreign country or neighoring state, the slate is blank. My best journies have been ones where I have thrown away the schedule, grabbed a local map and hit the streets with my camera. My most beloved vacations are those spent near the water - on a river or lake, with nothing to do but pass the time in a huge chaise with a great book. What about you? A Visit to Morris Arboretum

One of the things that I love about living in the greater Philly area, is the amazing wealth of places to visit and things to do. This weekend Clemens and I visited Morris Arboretum, one of our favorite places. We get an annual membership each use and go there often.

They have just opened the seasonal Railroad Garden filled with trains (a bit hit with the kids) and miniature houses and buildings made with natural materials. In addition to the regular display, each year they add buildings on a specific theme. This year its Painted Ladies and features adorable Victorian homes copied from actual buildings in San Francisco, Cape May, NJ and Cincinnati.

The rose garden was spectacular, as usual and Clemens and I both had a wonderful time taking photos and breathing in the wonderful scents, colors and bird song.
